If you’re new to the events industry, you may be exploring ways to grow your career—and certification is a great place to start. The Event Industry Council’s (EIC) Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) is one of the most recognized certifications. But what does it involve? Why should you become a CMP? Why does it matter if meeting professionals are certified? Here’s all you need to know about becoming a CMP.
What is a CMP certification?
CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) is a globally recognized credential awarded by the Events Industry Council to individuals who demonstrate expertise in meetings, events and conventions. The CMP program is designed to raise the standards of professionalism in our industry. It recognizes those who’ve built strong knowledge and experience.
Why does CMP certification matter?
The events industry runs on trust, expertise and relationships. Clients and employers want to work with knowledgeable and reliable professionals. CMP certification shows that you’ve met the EIC’s standards, and shows you’re committed to delivering outstanding events.
Earning your CMP shows that you’re serious about best practice, ongoing learning and ethical conduct. It’s a powerful way to stand out in a competitive job market, and it can open doors to new opportunities.
How to become a CMP
The path to CMP certification is straightforward but takes commitment. Start by gaining hands-on experience in the industry and build your knowledge through CMP approved education including workshops, webinars and conferences. You can also meet the education requirement by completing a minimum of 200 hours’ work experience with a professional organization through an accredited educational institution or university, as an internship.
Once you’ve achieved the experience and education requirements, gather your documentation and submit your application. Once approved, prepare for the exam using study guides, practice tests and peer support. Passing the exam is the final step to becoming CMP certified.

What other events industry accreditation is available?
As well as EIC’s CMP the events industry offers several other accreditations:
The Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP) designation is managed by the International Live Events Association (ILEA). CSEP recognizes event professionals who’ve proven their skills in planning and delivering special events.
Another option is ICCASkills. ICCASkills is developed by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). All are globally recognized. Many education sessions at IMEX America and IMEX Frankfurt are approved for CMP, CSEP and ICCASkills, making it easy to work toward different accreditations.
